my simple process
My straightforward process guides you from initial concept through to final production, ensuring clear communication and high-quality results every step of the way.
01
Immersive Research
The journey began with uncovering the rich history and cultural significance of Ashavali Brocade, an intricate weaving tradition rooted in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. With limited information available online and only one exclusive book documenting its history, my research relied heavily on firsthand interactions with artisans and archival resources. Understanding its origins under King Ashapalli and its evolution during the reign of the Chaulukya dynasty helped frame the narrative of this timeless craft.
02
Capturing Human Essence
The true essence of Ashavali Brocade lies in the hands of its artisans—the silent storytellers who bring intricate patterns to life. I focused on capturing the precision, patience, and dedication of these weavers as they meticulously interlace silk and zari threads. Through intimate portraits and close-up shots, I aimed to highlight their craftsmanship, the deep-rooted traditions they uphold, and the fading legacy they strive to preserve.
03
Workshop Spaces
Ashavali Brocade is not just a textile; it is a living heritage. To showcase its journey, I explored the weaving clusters of Ahmedabad, where artisans work in dimly lit workshops filled with the rhythmic sounds of handlooms. Each frame revealed the contrast between tradition and modernity—age-old weaving techniques standing resilient against the backdrop of a rapidly evolving textile industry.
04
Ideation & Visual Storyboarding
With a clear understanding of the craft’s intricacies, I structured the documentary to transition seamlessly from history to process, culminating in the final masterpiece. The goal was to shift focus from the finished product to the unseen artistry behind it. I envisioned a storytelling approach that would immerse viewers in the weaving process, making them feel the effort and soul poured into each fabric.
05
Production: Capturing the Narrative
Visiting the workshops, I documented the step-by-step process of weaving Ashavali Brocade—from preparing the warp and weft to the final embellishments. The sound of wooden looms, the glimmer of gold zari threads, and the deft movements of the artisans were carefully framed to showcase the harmony between technique and tradition. Each shot aimed to preserve the authenticity of the craft, revealing the human touch behind every weave.
06
Post-Production & Delivery
I wove together visuals, sound, and narration to create an immersive storytelling experience. A carefully curated soundscape—featuring subtle Indian classical undertones, the rhythmic beats of the loom, and moments of silence—enhanced the emotional depth of the documentary. The final sequence emphasized not just the beauty of Ashavali Brocade but also its vulnerability, urging viewers to appreciate, preserve, and support this dying art form.
